  1. INTRODUCTION
  2.  
  3.   Xit provides a one button click to many desktop operations, such as closing a
  4.   window or displaying a task list. When first loaded, it adds a 'Close' button
  5.   (an 'X') on the left side of all titlebars and a 'LaunchPad', 'Task List' and
  6.   'Rollup' button on the right side. Pressing the close button does the same
  7.   action as pressing Alt-F4, or selecting the 'Close' option in the system menu.
  8.   All operations can also be assigned to the middle or right mouse buttons, or
  9.   to keys.
  10.  
  11.   Buttons are completely configurable: display on left or right side, and assign
  12.   any action to them. There are more than 20 available actions such as close,
  13.   open parent, copy, paste, rollup and user defined (assign any OS/2 or DOS
  14.   command to a button). The button bitmaps can also be modified.

  16. UPDATE WARNING + UN-INSTALL
  17.  
  18.   If you currently have an earlier version of Xit running, you MUST follow these
  19.   steps before installing Xit:
  20.  
  21.       1) Remove Xit from your startup folder or startup.cmd file.
  22.       2) Reboot - this is usually the only way to unload Xit's .dll file
  23.       3) You can now remove/backup the old Xit files
  24.       4) Proceed with the install
  25.  
  26. INSTALLATION
  27.  
  28.   Files in this release:
  29.                 XIT.EXE         - runtime
  30.                 XITDLL2.DLL     - support file
  31.                 XITBMP.DLL      - button bitmaps (800x600 or less)
  32.                 XITBMP1.DLL     - button bitmaps (above 800x600 resolution)
  33.                 XIT.HLP         - help file
  34.                 BITMAPS.ZIP     - (optional) button bitmaps for editing
  35.                 HISTORY.DOC     - history log of Xit releases
  36.                 FILE_ID.DIZ     - id file for BBSs
  37.                 VENDOR.DOC      - vendor distribution license
  38.                 README.XIT      - this file

  40.   If you have Taskbar running, close it down before before running Xit - it
  41.   may not be compatible with Xit. Copy the first five files to any directory.
  42.   Insure this directory is in the LIBPATH statement in CONFIG.SYS or that the
  43.   current directory is indicated (LIBPATH=.). It's a good idea to place this
  44.   program in the startup folder. Xit is now ready to run - no need to reboot.
  45.   Xit does not modify CONFIG.SYS. If you wish to edit the default button
  46.   bitmaps, you can unzip the bitmaps.zip file and use the OS/2 ICONEDIT.EXE
  47.   program to edit them. See the online help for more info. If you are happy
  48.   with the default bitmaps, you can delete the bitmaps.zip file (the default
  49.   bitmaps are stored in xitbmp.dll and xitbmp1.dll).

  51. USING XIT
  52.  
  53.   When Xit is loaded, it defaults to visible and enabled. You can change the
  54.   options by pressing the 'Options' button on the main Xit window.
  55.  
  56.   To override the option settings, use these startup options:
  57.  
  58.                 /NM     - don't minimize/hide on startup
  59.                 /S      - suspend Xit on startup
  60.  
  61.   To toggle Xits state, press the Enable/Suspend button. To exit Xit, press the
  62.   Terminate button. Read the online help for more info (press F1).
  63.  
  64.   Warning: If you set both 'Hide' and 'Remove from task list' options, you will
  65.   not be able to access the Xit window from the task list. If this happens,
  66.   press the right mouse button over any Xit titlebar button, then select 'Show'.

  68. OBTAINING XIT
  69.  
  70.   Xit is shareware. The first time Xit is loaded, a registration dialog is
  71.   shown. For the remainder of the trial period, you can use Xit fully - it is
  72.   not crippled in any way. After the trial period, you must register it if you
  73.   decide to keep it. Check to online help for full registration info.
  74.  
  75.   For quick registration, please send $15 US or $15 Cdn to CodeSmith at the
  76.   address below. Include your email address to obtain your registration code
  77.   as soon as possible, and include your regular mailing address. The full

  98.   hooking into the application by using the exception list (under Xit
